Essay Proposal 1 Essays - Crime In Toronto, LGBT History In Canada

Sociological Theories Applied to the McArthur Killings Santiago Arango ID: 0983059 University of Guelph My essay will be focusing on the 2010-2017 Toronto serial homicides committed by Bruce McArthur on the why and how he did what he did. It will look at all 8 victims collectively that had ties to Church and Wellesley, Toronto's gay village. The victims were all gay men with physical similarities which usually included facial hair or a beard, and six were from South Asia or the Middle East , some of which were leading double lives because of their sexual orientation or lack of stable housing. An article by the Guardian goes into detail explaining how McArthur's killings went unnoticed. It touches on the years of victimization of the Gay community and how the police had failed to react appropriately to the multiple disappearances. The mayor mentions how the police force had ineffectively responded to the situation, Graham, D. (2018). I also look at a timeline of the case provided by the Toronto Star and it shows they had him as a person of interest earlier on in the case showing how the police certainly could have caught him much earlier on , The Star . (2019) . The article also looked at Bruce himself, mentioning how his appearance and demeanor make him appear harmless. It mentions how he was once married with 2 children and grandchildren making it harder to believe that he is both homosexual and a murderer. A look at his early life shows just how normal he appeared to be and that he struggled to come to terms with being homosexual, Edmiston, J. Inc., P. (2018). Looking at all the information given I identified 2 sociological theories applicable to the Bruce McArthur killings. McArthur committed his crimes because of Anomie's theory of normlessness, and he was able to continue his crimes because of Left Realism theory. Anomie theory is when societies norms inadvertently put a strain on an individual. McArthur being heavily involved in his church and family life makes for an easy way to conform to their beliefs and traditions, traditions which have a clear disapproval of McArthur's sexual orientation. His normlessness surrounding his sexual preferences had put a strain on him causing him to act out. Left Realism is when the police's opposed and inefficient response to the situation creates a distrusting public, unwilling to co-operate with police investigations. McArthur might have been caught a lot sooner had the gay community been more trusting of the police and given them more information. References Graham, D. (2018). Career Advice From a Professional Stage Makeup Artist

Career Advice From a Professional Stage Makeup Artist What does it take to become a makeup artist for the theater? Well, when seeking career advice, it’s best to contact an expert. Judi Lewin has worked as a professional hair and makeup artist for over thirty-five years. We caught up with her during a film shoot to ask her some important questions about her career. Although she has been working in the movie and television industry, we asked her if she would talk about her extensive career as a makeup designer for the legitimate stage. Getting Started While living in her hometown of Toronto, Judi had a natural talent for makeup. Whether she was applying her makeup skills on herself or her friends, she had a knack for making people look their best. It wasn’t long before many of her â€Å"theater friends† requested her help. Soon, she found herself transforming the faces- and hairstyles- of actors. Her first professional experiences took place at local theaters in Toronto, with her earliest productions being community theater musicals, such as A Chorus Line, My Fair Lady, and Annie. Her love for her craft motivated her to take on show after show and, after a couple of years of amateur productions, she began to work on a professional basis. Judi has since worked in such theaters as the Canadian Opera Company, the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera, and the Pasadena Playhouse. Recently, she worked as the Key Makeup Designer for the new show, Happy Days- A New Musical, which was based upon the classic hit television show. Methods After accepting a job from a director, Judi reads through the script. After reading it through, she reads it a second time and makes notes, listing the characters and paying close attention to the setting. Then, she works with the director to find out â€Å"what specifically the director wants to see.† She does everything she can to learn about the director’s vision in advance before she begins the design process. Judi explained that in smaller, lower-budgeted productions, the director’s input might be all that she requires. However, the bigger the show, the more likely producers, executives, and others will want to express their opinion- and that’s when the business of the makeup artist can really get complicated. Do Your Research Judi recommends that up-and-coming makeup designers constantly gather historical images- this means finding photographs, illustrations, and other images from any era in the past to serve as inspiration or source material. Also, try to find information and visual material from and about as many different countries and cultures as possible. By gathering these images from the internet, old books, and second-hand stores, a makeup artist will increase their knowledge of different looks, eras, and lifestyles, from â€Å"aristocracy to someone who lives in the slums.† Working with Actors It is common for actors to feel insecure- sometimes about their looks, but sometimes about their performance. Occasionally, Judi has worked with a few prima donnas, but she has a weapon against rudeness. â€Å"Kill them with kindness,† she says. â€Å"Be lovely and polite.† She also mentioned that because so much time is spent together, actors often reveal personal details to their makeup artists. Her rule about that is, â€Å"Nothing leaves the makeup room.† Career Advice According to Judi, here are two reliable ways to become a professional makeup artist: Attend a Makeup School (She recommends The Makeup Designory in Burbank, California and New York City).Intern with a professional who works in both theater and television (That way the intern will learn two very different techniques). Benefits of the Theater One of the reasons Judi loves working in live theater so much is simply because it’s alive! â€Å"In theater, things need to happen now!† Her stage experience is a sharp contrast to her film work, in which the general rule is to work on the makeup until it is perfect. During a musical, the makeup artist has a limited amount of time to get things right- this makes the experience both challenging and fun. The excitement of live theater invigorates Judi Lewin and her fellow artists.

Gender in Action- this is Women in Contemporary Society class Assignment

Gender in Action- this is Women in Contemporary Society class - Assignment Example How women were often judged through physical appearance, rather than assessing their inherent ability to possess qualities greater than that which would be seen as the normal expected behavior. In the end, â€Å"It was no ordinary thing that called her away-- it was probably farther from ordinary than anything that had ever happened in Dickson County. But what her eye took in was that her kitchen was in no shape for leaving; her bread all ready for mixing, half the flour sifted and half unsifted,† (Cook, p. 257). To epitomize the choice that many within the woman’s movement would be faced with, â€Å"Even after she had her foot on the door-step, her hand on the knob, Martha Hale had a moment of feeling she could not cross that threshold. And the reason it seemed she couldnt cross it now was simply because she hadnt crossed it before,† (Cook, p. 258). Ultimately, the choice of whether or not to enter into a new aspect of public life that may have been unimaginable up until that very moment. Not only feeling the responsibility to stay with that which would have been known but to also have the opportunity to experience new things at the same time. For children, they are often faced with the position of determining their gender roles in society, not only in terms of how they see themselves but also, how they take those perceptions and translate them into how they ultimately see others around them that they encounter. As a group of the human race that tends to be far more impressionable than those who would be older, the ability to enforce those roles within their own cultural groups is often times aided by their understanding of what either gender is expected to do and expected to be. In terms of the issue as to whether or not most children would follow such role definitions, for the most part, some children would seek to do so and some would wish to re-evaluate their role within the world and would create a different path for
